Last update - 18:07 21/07/2008 IDF soldier moderately injured in latest parachuting accident By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: Israel, IDF, Nahal brigade An Israel Defense Forces soldier sustained moderate injuries on Monday during a parachuting accident at a training facility near Rehovot, in the third such incident over the last two months. Initial reports suggested a technical malfunction at the facility caused the accident, which transpired at the Tel Nof army base. The soldier, from the Nahal infantry brigade's reconnaissance battalion, was taken to Kaplan hospital in Rehovot for treatment. Advertisement Many elite IDF units undergo training in parachuting for airborne operations, as does the entire Paratrooper infantry brigade. Last week, the commander of the IDF center for flying and special training at Tel Nof, Colonel Dror Platin, was left in a serious condition after a parachuting accident next to Palmahim. Platin had requested to parachute from a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft while overseeing a routine training exercise. At the time of the jump he was struck on the shoulder. It appears that he then opened the parachute too late, resulting in the breaking of both his legs on landing. Eight people were injured on Independence Day, two of them seriously, when a parachutist taking part in an IDF demonstration crashed into the crowd at Jerusalem beach in Tel Aviv. First sergeant Yossi Goodman, of the Maglan elite reconnaissance unit, died in a parachuting accident next to Nitzanim in 2006 when his parachute didn't open.
