7-year-old boy dies in Golan fire, sister, 11, in critical condition

A seven-year-old boy was killed in a fire that erupted at his home in Moshav Keshet in the Golan before dawn Monday. The boy's sister, 11, was evacuated by helicopter in critical condition and taken to a nearby hospital.

The children's father, Army Radio reported Monday, returned home late Sunday night and noticed a strong smell permeating the house. He moved one of the children into the next room and then the fire began to spread.

Magen David Adom emergency medical staff who arrived at the scene attempted to resuscitate the young boy for a long time while firefighters doused the flames. Ultimately, paramedics pronounced the child dead.

A resident of Keshet who helped treat the victims said that he saw the house going up in flames and assisted in evacuating the two children from the building. "We failed with one of the children, with the other we were a little more successful," he said.

Firefighters at the Kiryat Shmona fire station were summoned at around 4:30 AM. Station chief Danny Hananiya said the firefighters rushed to the two-storey duplex. He said the first storey was made largely of wood and the roof was made of asbestos. "The flames were enormous, 5-6 meters high. It was difficult for the fire trucks to maneuver within the moshav. We came as close to the house as we could and put out the fire."

A fire expert has begun probing the incident.
