The women's national U20 basketball team lost yesterday to Ireland 64-55 and finished eighth place in the Division B of the European championship. Lin Golan led Israel with 16 points, followed by Noa Schor with 12 and Nofar Shalom with 10. Golan averaged 11.7 ppg for the tourney, while Shalom averaged 10.6. The only team Israel beat in its seven contests was Portugal. (Aire Livnat)

Maccabi Petah Tikva signed Uruguayan striker Roberto Sanchez to a four-year deal. At the same time, the Premier League team is worried about the ability of candidate Pablo Bastianini. The Argentinian striker has fared poorly in practices and was signed only after coach Nitzan Shirazi and scout Koby Refuah lobbied for him. Team officials, who discussed the issue on condition of anonymity, said that despite signing, if Bastianini won't cut it during training camp, he will be released. (Moshe Boker)

The nerves of Maccabi Netanya coach Lothar Matthaus, which were displayed during his outstanding playing career, popped up in his team's training camp in Austria this week. After losing a scrimmage to a Swiss club, the coach debriefed his players and told them, "I'm not bothered by the result, but we need to bring what we give in practice to the game. I expect more." Also yesterday, Bevan Fransman had his debut practice with the team and left a good impression on his coach. (Dor Belech)
