Hitler icons take center stage at Jerusalem students' end-of-year art show

Drawings of Adolf Hitler have taken center stage at a year-end exhibit for the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, raising the ire of the Center for Holocaust Survivor Organizations in Israel.

The creator of the drawings, Nir Avigad, defended his provocative work, saying "just like Marilyn Monroe is an icon of beauty, the Dalai Lama is an icon of peace and Mother Theresa is an icon of mercy, so is Hitler an icon, an icon of evil."

"The world has built a taboo around this subject, it's forbidden to research, forbidden to develop, to touch, to laugh," Avigad added.

Avigad's drawings depict an outline of Hitler's face in a number of different settings and themes. In one, Hitler's face is made to resemble that of Theodor Herzl, in another as a dog, another as a Russian babushka doll, and one as a yin and yang symbol, to name a few.

"There exists a nearly absolute dearth of anything in the visual realm relating to the portrait of one of the most infamous people in human history," Avigad added.

The Bezalel Academy has chosen to stand by the provocative exhibit, saying, "We don't restrict our students, unless it is a serious affront to good taste," said Arnon Zuckerman, president of the academy.

Zuckerman added, "I don't believe there is anything harmful in this exhibit, although I personally would not use an icon of Hitler."

As part of his presentation, Avigad set up a website called The Daily Hitler, onto which he uploads a different icon of Hitler every day.
