Seven soldiers arrested over beach brawl
By Yuval Azoulay
Tags: Atlit, Military Police

Military Police arrested seven soldiers yesterday for allegedly taking part in a brawl near the navy commando base in Atlit.

Army officials said that because the incident involved both soldiers and civilians, the police would handle the investigation.

The seven soldiers were transferred to police custody.

Blood tests showed two of the soldiers were legally drunk, the police reported.

Israel Defense Forces officials said the brawl broke out around 3:30 A.M. early yesterday morning, when two families from Beit Jann set up camp on the beach adjacent to the base.

That strip of beach had been declared a closed military zone, because of its proximity to the Crusader fort that serves as the elite navy unit Shayetet 13's home base.

Soldiers guarding the place - who serve at the base but are not members of the commando unit - approached the families and asked them to leave, but they refused. A verbal exchange ensued, which the families say contained racist overtones, and the argument quickly escalated into violence.

During the fight, one family member, an off-duty Border Police officer, sustained light to moderate injuries.
