Lebanese paper: One kidnapped IDF soldier killed in attack, one wounded
By Yoav Stern

At least one of two Israel Defense Forces soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah during a 2006 raid that sparked the Second Lebanon War died at the time of his abduction, a Lebanese newspaper reported yesterday. The report said the second soldier was wounded during the abduction and that his current condition was unknown.

The report in the Hezbollah-affiliated newspaper Al-Akhbar, which cited "high-ranking" officials, did not state which of the soldiers was killed. Israel says it believes both Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev died during the raid.

The report came ahead of today's prisoner exchange, in which Hezbollah will return the soldiers or their remains to Israel, and marks the first time Hezbollah or media affiliated with the group has commented on their fate.

The article - which was written by Ibrahim al-Amin, a journalist who previously interviewed Israeli businessman Elhanan Tennenbaum while he was held captive by Hezbollah - also states that Israel refrained from bombing a Hezbollah headquarters building for fear that the abducted soldiers were being held there.

The report describes how Hezbollah abducted the soldiers, using four squads of militants. One squad was responsible for mortar fire, a second provided covering fire, and a third fired in the direction of IDF emplacements in the area. The fourth squad had the most important role, penetrating Israeli territory with stretchers and loading the two soldiers on a civilian vehicle that took them to a nearby location, where the vehicle was exchanged for another.

"It was clear that one of the soldiers was dead," the report said.

As the operation began, the report says, IDF troops were patroling the area in two Hummer jeeps. Hezbollah's aim was to abduct the soldiers in the first vehicle. The militants responsible for the kidnapping had apparently trained for the possibility that the doors of the jeep would be locked.

The rocket-propelled grenades fired at the Hummer struck the side on which Goldwasser and Regev were sitting, wounding both. They were removed by the Hezbollah militants, while two other IDF soldiers got out of the jeep and fled to an adjacent wooded area.

A Hezbollah clean-up squad arrived at the site to douse the jeep with gasoline and torch it, in an effort to hide evidence that might have shed light on the incident.
