Prosecution: We won't show evidence to Olmert's lawyers before Talansky questioning

The State Prosecution announced Sunday morning it would not transfer evidence accumulated in the ongoing corruption probe against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ahead of Thursday's cross-examination of the key witness, American businessman Morris Talansky.

The announcement came after Olmert's attorneys asked the Jerusalem District Court on Thursday to allow them to review the investigation material the prosecution had amassed.

Olmert's attorney Eli Zohar said that because the defense team had yet to receive the material, it would not be able to conclude Talansky's cross examination on time and would have to summon the witness again.

Zohar said the cross-examination would begin on 17 July, and last five days.

Talansky's attorneys said in response that their client would "give evidence for as long as is requested of him. If his deposition exceeds the time slot originally allotted to him, Mr Talansky will return to Israel at the request of the court".

They also said Talansky has nothing to hide and that he would testify undaunted.

Olmert is suspected of having illegally received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Talansky, a Jewish American businessman, over the course of 15 years.
