Dichter: Recent terror attacks in Jerusalem are not start of new intifada

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter on Saturday said that a spate of recent terror attacks in Jerusalem does not constitute the start of a new intifada, speaking shortly after a shooting attack in the capital late Friday.

"It is hard to find a link between the last three attacks in the capital, but the matter will be investigated," Dichter said, referring to the shooting at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in which 8 people were killed in March, a bulldozer rampage on a busy street which left three dead earlier this month, and the shooting attack late Friday at the entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem.

Two policemen were wounded in the most recent attack. They were later named as Border Policeman David Shriki from Rishon Letzion and police officer Imad Gadir from Kfar Zarzir in northern Israel.

According to Israel Radio, one of the victims, a Border Policeman, was seriously wounded and an another, belonging to the Israel Police, was moderately hurt.

The minister, a former Shin Bet security service chief, added that the Israel police needs to check how the two policemen were caught unaware by the terrorist's gunfire.

"If the need should arise, the police will know how to draw conclusions," Dichter stated, speaking during a visit to the Jerusalem hospital where the border policeman wounded in the Friday's attack was receiving treatment.

Army Radio reported at midday Saturday that the medical condition of the border policeman had deteriorated and was considered very serious.

The attacker had opened fire with a handgun toward a group of Israelis at the Lion's Gate of the walled Old City from a Muslim cemetery, police said.

One of the victims was reportedly hit in the head and the second in the chest. Both were evacuated by helicopter from the scene.

Armed people in the targeted group and police officers shot back and it was not immediately clear if the attacker was hit, police said.

Israeli security forces rounded up Palestinian men overnight, and several suspects were reportedly brought in for questioning, but police were still searching for the shooter.

Red police tape criss-crossed the Lion's Gate entrance, barring people from entry. On Saturday morning, traffic crawled to a halt outside a main checkpoint between Jerusalem and the West Bank, apparently to search for the perpetrator.

It was the sixth attack in Jerusalem since the beginning of the year, and came just a week after an Arab construction worker went on a rampage with a huge earth moving vehicle, killing three Israelis before being shot dead.

In March, a Palestinian from Jerusalem shot and killed eight Israelis in an attack on a Jewish seminary in the city.

Police Commissioner David Cohen said he did not believe the recent attacks were related, and that the police investigates every terror attack separately.

Cohen stressed that the Jerusalem District police have boosted their forces over recent weeks.
