IDF officer, civilian wounded by Palestinian fire near Qalqilyah

An Israel Defense Forces officer was moderately wounded and an Israeli civilian sustained light wounds in an exchange of fire with a Palestinian militant near the West Bank city of Qalqilyah on Friday.

The militant was killed during the gunbattle, which took place close to 1 A.M. southwest of the Palestinian city.

The civilian was wounded when his car came under fire near the crossing. He continued driving until he reached an IDF post, where he told soldiers what had occurred.

The gunman opened fire on the Israeli forces who came searching the area, wounding the officer. The officer returned fire, killing the militant.

The officer received first-aid treatment a short while later on the spot, and was taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. Israeli forces found a second handgun on the body of the militant.

No Palestinian group immediately claimed responsibility. But Palestinian security officials said the gunman, 49, was a member of Hamas who was wanted by Israel.

On Thursday, IDF troops killed an unamed member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade as he approached the border fence between Gaza into Israel earlier in the day, apparently in an attempt to infiltrate.

His death marked the first fatality along the Israel-Gaza border since the beginning of the Egypt-brokered truce on June 19. The cease-fire does not extend to the West Bank.

An IDF spokesman said soldiers shot the man after he ignored their calls to stop and only saw later that he had been unarmed. The family of the victim, an 18-year-old youth, said he was probably looking for scrap metal along the border when he was killed.

On Wednesday, Border Police troops operating undercover in the West Bank opened fire and killed a wanted Hamas man attempting to flee arrest.

Palestinians said two people were wounded in the incident in Kufr Dan, near the northern city of Jenin. They and two others were arrested, they said.
