Soccer / Awat faces the ax at La Coruna
By Pablo Gomez

LA CORUNA, Spain - The fate of goalkeeper Dudu Awat at Deportivo la Coruna was effectively sealed over six months ago, when he punched the team's back-up goalie, Uruguayan Gustavo Munua. After the violent incident between the two goalies, which saw Awat need eight stitches to a gash in his forehead, team coach Miguel Angel Lotina said that he planned to suspend both players from team training.

Thereafter, Lotina repented and allowed both 'keepers to train and even play in the first team. It is safe to assume that, had Awat been in better form for the last few games of the season, his sullied relationship with Munua would have been forgotten and Lotina would have given him another chance. But Awat was not on top form, making it easier for Deportivo to ax him from its plans for next season.

Deportivo team bosses began looking for replacements for their problematic goalkeepers in January, just before the transfer window closed, but failed to find any serious options. The problem with Awat was the generous contract he signed with Deportivo - a three-year contract worth around one million euros per season. There are very few teams in Spain or elsewhere willing to pay such an astronomical sum for a goalie with a problematic disciplinary record, and who has been far from his best form for the past 12 months.

Nonetheless, Deportivo is determined to offload Awat before the start of the next season. Lotina has even repeated what he said in January: that he is not counting on either of the keepers for next season.

The final nail in the coffin for Awat came yesterday, when both he and Manua were excluded from the team's pre-season training camp in Denmark. In response, Awat informed team bosses that he is unable to remain in La Coruna and train alone, as they had requested, since he is injured.

Neither Awat nor his agent, Ronen Katsav, were available for comment.
