Gilor, Yaron take President Singles titles at Ramat Gan
By Norman Spiro

The finals of the annual National President Singles were played on the weekend at the Ramat Gan club. Once again it was the indomitable Ruthie Gilor from Kiryat Ono who took the title in a dramatic fight back against Ra'anana's Laureen Harris, while Ramat Gan's Amir Yaron came back from the cold to win the men's title against his clubmate Herzel Dunsky.

Harris started of with consistently accurate drawing to the jack, setting up an impressive 15-3 lead after 13 ends, before Gilor settled down to win the next three ends to close the gap to 15-9 after 16 ends.

Harris countered immediately to claim two shots, when her last bowl edged the jack away from Gilor's lying shots, Harris then leading 17-9. But from then on it was Gilor who took control scoring a full-house four on the next end for 17-13, and then adding two more twos to draw level at 17-all.

In the next end Gilor lay four shots for game but Harris saved with her last bowl for Gilor's two count and 19-17 lead. Harris added a single for the last 23rd end to start off at 19-18, and it was once again Gilor's cool nerve to draw the two game winning bowls. Harris did well to reach the final after winning her semi-final against Ramat Hasharon's Lola Katz, having previously accounting for Ra'anana's Naomi Fix and Ramat Gan's Riri Merav and Tami Kamzel.

Gilor had won her semi-final against Haifa's Irit Grencel. Gilor had also won the title in 2006 when she won her semi-final also against Harris, the latter then also having accounted then for Tami Kamzel.

A somewhat unfamiliar field saw four Ramat Gan men contesting the semi-final, none of them amongs the top 24 ranked players. Amongst the last eight in the quarter-finals it was only the number one seed Ra'anana's Zvika Hadar and the number seven seed Alan Saitowitz still in the field. Yaron reached the final by previous round wins over last year's winner Raymond Sher and over National Singles Alan Saitowitz, and then over his club mate Danny Slodownik in the semi-final.

In the other semi-final Herzel Dunsky was up against Dror Zomberg after having eliminated fifth seed Colin Silberstein, while Zomberg had excellent wins against Zvika Hadar, Laurence Hurwitz and Rami Oron. Dusky defeated Zomberg to face up to Yaron in the final.

Yaron, with immaculate drawing and giving little leeway to his opponent, won 21-10 after leading 17-2. Yaron's consistent play throughout the tournament brought back memories of the past, when as a teenager at 17 years old in 1994, he won the National Singles title against World Gold Medalist Lawrence Mendelsohn, and then added his second Singles Title two years later against Colin Silberstein. Out in the cold for some years Yaron showed the form with which he had earned his youthful honors.

RG dominates pairs

Played off at Ramat Gan on Tuesday evening was the final of the annual National Mixed Pairs, and again it was an all Ramat Gan affair, and again it was the earlier President Singles winner, Amir Yaron in the final line up with his partner Daphna Rothstein facing off against his club mates Micha Farkash paired with Riki Ovadia. The two finalist had in their semi-finals each accounted for Ra'anana teams - Yaron had beaten Mel Travis and Natalie Goldsmith while Farkash had won against Zvika Hadar and Naomi Fix.

The beginning of the game showed very little difference between the two sides, with each of the four players delivering accurate bowls to provide a game of high standard.

Rothstein set the pace with consistent accurate drawing to the jack, well matched by her opposing lead Ovadia, both players providing excellent support for their skips.

The score was level at 6-all after eight ends and it was only then that Yaron broke through for a four count when Farkash failed to save. After 12 ends Yaron led 13-6, and the next end might well have changed the fortunes of the game when Farkash lay six shots, and Yaron with his last bowl had a perfect save for the second shot.

It was Yaron's ability to often come in with shot saving conversion shots, which ended the game at 19-10 in his favor together with his partner Rothstein.
