Last update - 01:24 11/07/2008 Preschool assistant gets 29 years for sexually assaulting 29 children By Ofra Edelman, Haaretz Correspondent Tags: rape, child abuse, Israel A former preschool assistant was sentenced Thursday to 29 years in prison for sexually assaulting 29 children aged 3 to 12, over the course of three years. The Tel Aviv District Court also ordered Yitzhak Borovsky to pay NIS 10,000 to each of his 29 victims, for a total of NIS 290,000 in compensation. In January, Borovsky was convicted of committing indecent acts, attempted indecent acts, nonconsensual sodomy, attempted nonconsensual sodomy and assault, and making threats. The court ruled he "sexually and emotionally damaged 29 children for years in a methodical, well-planned manner, via deceitful means." Advertisement Borovsky committed the offenses at ultra-Orthodox preschools, schools and after-school programs that employed him. In sentencing Borovsky, the court emphasized that his employment at educational institutions enabled him to exploit the intimacy he developed with his victims, which was "fed with praise, gifts and sometimes money." Some of the children suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder due to Borovsky's abuse and threats to hurt them if they revealed his actions. Borovsky argued that he was the victim of a libelous plot cooked up in the community where the children live, but the court rejected his claims. "Standing before us are 29 innocent children whose bodies and souls were destroyed by the sinful actions of the accused," the judges wrote, adding that it was one of the most extreme cases they had ever adjudicated. "We have no doubt that the accused's acts are incomparably ugly, abominable, despicable and severe," the three-judge panel wrote.
