Assad: Olmert can't make commitments needed for peace
By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent and The Associated Press

Syrian President Bashar Assad voiced doubt this week over Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's ability to lead indirect talks between Syria and Israel to an ultimate peace agreement.

In interviews the Syrian president granted to several French media outlets, Assad said that Syria was not ruling out a deal with Israel, if Israel complies with Syrian demands, but that he did not believe that Olmert was capable of making such commitments. Assad's remarks were published in the French weekly news magazine L'Express.

Asssad was interviewed by the French press ahead of his arrival this weekend for the Mediterranean Union summit to begin in Paris on Sunday.

The Syrian Website Cham Press reported Thursday that Assad planned to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak during his visit in France, after years of tension between Syria and Egypt.

Meanwhile Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on a Syrian mobile phone operator and a chain of duty free shops which they say are controlled by Rami Makhluf, Assad's cousin.

The move freezes any U.S. assets that Syriatel and the Ramak duty free shops have and prohibits U.S. citizens from doing business with them.

The administration led by U.S. President George W. Bush expanded sanctions against Syria this year to target individuals profiting from Syrian government corruption. It later designated Makhluf as a target.

Adam Szubin, a Treasury Department official, says that Makhluf has used government contacts to enrich himself at the expense of the Syrian people.
