Convicted PI reopens Trojan horse scandal
By Nurit Roth

The 'Trojan horse' industrial spying affair is about to make headlines again after Alex Weinstein, one of the convicted perpetrators in the industrial espionage case, recently provided incriminating information to the police against the heads of some of the country's largest companies, saying they knew perfectly well what was going on.

Weinstein had headed the business information department of a private investigation agency. In the industrial espionage scandal that came to light in 2005, he was convicted of deploying Trojan horse-type software on behalf of his clients to illicitly collect information stored in corporate competitors' hard discs, including e-mail correspondence, passwords, internet surfing history and to record keyboard typing by the user.

Weinstein and his boss, Zvi Krochmal, defended their clients, and in the investigation and trial that followed testified that they had not been aware of the software's use.

The investigation agency used Trojan horse software to spy on 33 companies, including firms like the Hot cable company, Steimatzky book store chain and Globes newspaper. Weinstein was convicted in November 2007.

But a few days ago, prior to his sentencing, Weinstein was questioned again by the police and provided a detailed statement on persons who had previously been identified as clients of Krochmal investigation agency. Weinstein told police that the clients had known exactly what investigative methods would be employed by the agency, whose clients included Amdocs, Tami 4, Home Center and Cellcom, but it remains unclear which of these were mentioned by Weinstein during his questioning.

The client companies and their management have also denied any knowledge of the use of Trojan horse software. Former Cellcom CEO Yitzhak Peterburg told investigators at the time that the thought did not even cross his mind, adding that it is against his code of ethics.

Tami4 CEO Daniel Taragan told investigators that he had even asked Krochmal whether the information was obtained legally, and had been assured that it had.

Following Weinstein's new evidence, Krochmal was questioned again at prison, where he is serving a 32-month sentence. He however is sticking to his earlier story, according to which his clients know nothing of the agency's methods.
