Defense Ministry to PMO: Hurry and reinforce Gaza-area homes
By Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondent

The Defense Ministry on Wednesday requested that the Prime Minister's Office take advantage of the truce between Israel and Hamas, and work as quickly as possible to settle the issue of reinforcing homes bordering the Gaza Strip.

The homes within four and a half kilometers of the Strip need reinforcement most urgently, wrote Defense Minister Ehud Barak's adviser for settlement affairs, Eitan Broshi, in a letter to Ra'anan Dinur, director general of the PMO.

Broshi urged the PMO to expedite the reinforcement of these homes, saying it is the first stage of a plan presented to the government at the end of 2007. The estimated cost of this stage is NIS 327 million, which would be used to reinforce 3,300 homes.

The second stage of the reinforcement plan would require NIS 500 million in funding to protect an additional 4,700 homes located beyond the four-and-a-half kilometer mark. Broshi urged the PMO to undertake both stages simultaneously.

Before the cease-fire went into effect June 19, the communities bording the Gaza Strip faced almost daily barrages of Qassam rockets fired by Palestinian militants.
