Last update - 16:22 09/07/2008 Safety defects found in 15% of children's summer camp buses By Haaretz Service Tags: buses  The Transportation Ministry on Wednesday carried out an operation to inspect buses used for transporting children to summer camp, and found that 15 percent of them have safety defects. Those buses have been removed from the roads. The Transportation Ministry dispatched mobile units to various summer camps in the Tel Aviv area, where they conducted spot checks of the buses. The inspectors checked 170 buses during their investigation, of which 25 were found to have serious safety defects. The defective buses have been brecalled, and their owners were instructed to repair them as soon as possible. In 13 percent of the cases, shortcomings were discovered in the chassis or frame, 11 percent had tire problems, four percent had defective brakes and three and a half percent had steering problems. Advertisement Only 63 of the buses were found to have no defects whatsoever, and another 82 had minor problems. Those buses were not removed from use, but their drivers signed a form obligating them to repair the vehicles.
