Man finds paintings stolen from father's home at Berlin auction
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Berlin, Nahariya, Art auction

A Nahariya resident made a startling discovery this week, when he happened to find works of art stolen from his father's home in the northern city up for sale at an art auction in Berlin.

The surprise discovery led to the arrest of a 40-year-old resident of Nahariya suspected of breaking into the house nine months ago and pilfering the paintings.

The paintings are by famed Israeli artist Yaakov Steinhardt and were reportedly appraised at tens of thousands of shekels.

When the owner's son happened upon the artwork at the auction, he returned to Israel and told his father who immediately filed a complaint with Nahariya police who contacted Berlin police leading to an investigation with the aid of Interpol.

Police investigators contacted the art dealer who provided the artwork for the auction, who led them to the burglar from Nahariya.

The investigation has found that the works of art were sold to the art dealer for 30,000 Euros.

The suspect has a criminal record and police suspect he has been involved in a number of other high-dollar property thefts
