Last update - 12:47 10/07/2008 Modi'in leads in getting state funding for three Reform synagogues By Cnaan Liphshiz Tags: Israel, Modi'in  Three non-Orthodox communities have received state funding for synagogues following the precedent-setting dedication of Israel's first state-funded Reform synagogue in Modi'in, which opened its doors in May, following a compromise between the city's Yozma Reform community and a representative of the Orthodox community. Rabbi Nir Barkin, an activist in Yozma, said the communities were the Tivon Reform congregation; the Tzur Hadassah community; and the Modi'in movement. "Other communities have already applied for funding," he added. The compromise was reached after the Yozma group, founded in 1997 by Israel's first female rabbi, New York-born Kinneret Shiryon, petitioned the High Court of Justice in 2003, together with the Israel Religious Action Center. Shiryon has headed the Yozma community since then. It consists of some 240 families, of whom roughly 15 percent are new immigrants. Advertisement Precedent Yossi Aud, the executive director of Yozma, told Haaretz yesterday that the Modi'in compromise was drafted as a precedent. "We did not petition the court to fund our synagogue, but rather we demanded the city and the Housing Ministry put in place clearer criteria for constructing and funding religious institutions," said Aud. "Later we applied for funding based on these criteria." Aud said that Modi'in Mayor Moshe Spektor played "a very constructive role" in making the new synagogue possible.
