IDF rebukes Egyptian soldiers over fatal cross-border manhunt

Senior Israel Defense Forces officers on Tuesday criticized Egyptian troops' handling of an incident Monday, when an Egyptian officer was killed after he and his comrades crossed into Israeli territory in pursuit of Bedouin smugglers.

A joint IDF and Egyptian inquiry into the shooting death in the Har Harif area near the Israel-Egypt border indicates that the incident began when Egyptian forces opened fire in error, with Israeli troops then firing on them in return.

Egyptian soldiers who noticed the Bedouin drug smugglers set out in pursuit. An exchange of gunfire ensued, and one of the smugglers shot an Egyptian officer in the stomach. The officer later died of his wounds.

IDF soldiers who noticed the fighting mistakenly believed the gunfire was aimed at them, and subsequently returned fire.

The inquiry further indicated that the incident took place in the course of Egyptian operations against Bedouin smugglers, during which the Egyptian forces crossed the border into Israeli territory.

Egyptian officers told the inquiry that they were forced to do so after the smugglers opened fire on them, and that it was this gunfire that had killed the Egyptian officer.

At the conclusion of a further study of the incident, senior IDF Southern Command officers told Egyptian officers that the incident had been a grave one, and demanded that they prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

A senior military source described the incident as "shooting as a result of a misunderstanding." He said that the IDF forces shot at the source of fire believing that the gunfire was intended for them.

Military sources said the Egyptian soldier was not hit by IDF fire.
