AG: Curtail Metzger's term as religious judge

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz informed the High Court of Justice
Monday that he thinks that Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger should step
down from his post as a religious judge on the Supreme Rabbinic Court.

Nevertheless, Mazuz noted that the Knesset granted only the rabbinical
judicial appointments committee the authority to dismiss religious court
judges.

Mazuz presented his opinion in response to a High Court petition submitted by the Ometz anti-corruption organization against the decision in February not to remove Metzger from his post, after he allegedly accepted perks.

The police investigation against Metzger was opened in December 2004 after a television expose revealed that the rabbi and his family had stayed at a hotel for free.

In April 2006, Mazuz decided to close the case for lack of evidence.
At the same time he called on Metzger to accept responsibility and draw
conclusions.

In February this year, the committee that appoints religious court judges
decided not to force Metzger out. After the February meeting, Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann announced that in certain matters Metzger had acted inappropriately, but said the committee had not received sufficient evidence to impeach him.

However, Mazuz told the court Monday that in light of the nature and
importance of religious court judges, and the behavioral norms expected, there were a number of serious questions about Metzger's suitability to serve as chief rabbi and judge.

Metzger's media advisor responded that Mazuz had no authority to interfere in the committee's decision.
