State to sue Ashdod for sewage in stream
By Zafrir Rinat

The Environmental Protection Ministry plans to take legal action against the Ashdod Municipality for persistent pollution of the Lachish Stream.

The ministry informed green advocacy group Zalul of the decision after its two-year battle to clean up the stream, a central part of a city park, that has been damaged by sewage, mostly from recurring malfunctions in the city's sewage system.

About a month ago, Zalul informed Ashdod Mayor Zvi Zickler and Environment Minister Gideon Ezra that it planned to file suit against them for poor handling of the pollution in the stream. The green group charges that Zickler is not doing enough to clean up the stream despite heading an administration charged with rehabilitating the stream. Zalul noted there is an engineering plan that would provide solutions to the pollution problems, but it has not been implemented yet.

In response, the Environmental Protection Ministry informed Zalul last week that it is taking a series of legal measures designed to enforce the necessary actions to stop the pollution, including the construction of facilities that would prevent the pollution.

The city has promised the ministry it would complete construction of the facilities by the summer, but the ministry says no headway has been made vis-a-vis the construction, and the city continues to illicitly pour sewage into the stream during system malfunctions.

Ashdod municipal deputy director general David Hartoum said the city is taking steps to prevent pollution of the stream, and the Environmental Protection Ministry has failed to allocate funds to assist in the project.
