On Brzezinski against the right of return
This letter refers to Brzezinski against the right of return (WTR)
Mr. Rosner, In the past, I wrote to you a few times and you were kind enough to respond. I just read your blog about Brezinski and his alleged sensitive position concerning the Palestinians' "right of return", and, with all due respect, you, as well as Marty Peretz, are "off the mark". Perhaps, because I met the former Carter advisor, a few decades ago, as a correspondent for VOA/RFE, or simply because I studied him well, I respectfully suggest that his position has nothing to do with him being 'sensible' to the needs of Israel, suddenly after years of animosity against the Jewish state. People who know him, realize the Brezinski is Polish first, Catholic second and American third! Brezinski is surely aware that the problem of the so-called Palestinian refugees claim is being finally expanded to also address the issue of Jewish refugees from Islamic countries, and, once the ball starts rolling, other refugees might decide to join the bandwagon. Which, for Poland, is a potentially huge headache! One must remember that a large portion of the present Polish territory was carved out the former eastern parts of Germany, including the ancient cities of Danzig, Posen and Stettin, now called Gdansk, Poznan and Szczecin. These areas were German, some since the Twelfth and Thirteen Century, until they were taken over by Communist Poland after the end of WW2. Not that I have any shred of sympathy for the German Nazis and their local collaborators, the perpetrators of untold atrocities against the Jews there, but there are millions of former German residents, and their off-springs, still wanting to return to their ancient lands, or at least to be compensated for their losses. Poland and the Czech Republic are vigorously opposed to such rights of return, (for both the Germans and Hungarians), and any resolution for other "refugees" could rekindle old claims. In my opinion, Brezinski. who was warmly endorsed Carter's book and the volume by Walt and Measrsheimer, decrying the alleged influence of the Israel lobby in the US, has no love for Israel and no interest in helping Jerusalem to solve its problems with the Arabs. He is, however, a committed Polish patriot and a shrewd political manipulator, who is using the Palestinian refugees issue as a diversion, to imply that all such claims are futile and unacceptable. Remember, he is Polish FIRST!!! Hopefully, you will see my point, and comment. Sincerely yours, Shabbat Shalom, Jack Chivo Ph.D. West Vancouver, Canada
