Bush says supports Russian shipment of enriched uranium to Iran
By News Agencies
Tags: Russia, Bushehr, Iran

U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday that he supports Russia sending enriched uranium to Iran for civilian power use because it meant that Tehran did not need to pursue its own enrichment capabilities.

"If the Russians are willing to do that, which I support, then the Iranians do not need to learn how to enrich," Bush said. "If the Iranians accept that uranium for a civilian nuclear power plant, then there's no need for them to learn how to enrich."

Many fear that despite Iran's declaration that its nuclear program is peaceful, Tehran aims to develop nuclear weapons.

Earlier Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia had made its first shipment of nuclear fuel to Iran's Bushehr plant.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said it had received written assurances from Iran that the nuclear fuel delivered to Bushehr will be used for civilian purposes.

The IRNA state news agency on Monday quoted an Iranian official confirming that Iran had received the first batch of Russian nuclear fuel.

"The first batch is 82 tons for the first year of operations," the unnamed Iranian official was quoted as saying. He did not give further details.

A senior Iranian official also said on Monday said that Iran will not halt uranium enrichment even with delivery of fuel from Russia.

"There is no talk of halting enrichment. Nothing is related to freezing enrichment. The delivery [of fuel] is not in the framework of the [United Nations] resolutions or the framework of talks," the senior official said.

Asked if Iran would halt enrichment under any condition, he said, "No, not at all."

Construction at Bushehr had been frequently delayed. Officials said the delays were due to payment disputes, but many observers suggested Russia was also unhappy with Iran's obstinate resistance to international pressure to make its nuclear program more open and to ensure the international community that it was not developing nuclear arms.

Last week, Russia announced that its construction disputes with Iran had been resolved.
