Analysis / Bush's call to battle for the fate of the Mideast
By Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondent
Tags: Annapolis, Israel

What President Bush said to the Israelis and the Palestinians at Annapolis was very simple: Peace is your job. I will support you, help you, arrange ceremonies. But you have to deliver the peace agreement ? or not.

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley said two days ago that the president does not intend to bring to the table new ideas or specific solutions. It is too soon for him - and maybe it always will be. The American administration, despite rumors that emerge from time to time, has no intention of deciding for Israel what it should do.

Bush rejected detractors' claims that this is not the right time for a conference. Maybe the president is right ? it is always a good time to hold a peace conference, as long as the expectations are reasonable, as long as everyone understands that they are talking about a conference, not peace as yet.

Anyway, when the president spoke, he hinted at the main purpose of the Annapolis conference: More than 40 nations have sent someone to Maryland, proving to Iran that when America asks, they are ready to come.

"The battle for future of the Middle East" is at its zenith, according to Bush. One can view the Annapolis conference as a demonstration of this fact. This was a call to arms for the battle, and to join the right side of the barricades
