Poll: 70% of youth don't think Bedouin deserve same rights as Jews

Seventy percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 29 do not believe that the Bedouin deserve the same rights granted to Jews, according to a poll released on Wednesday conducted by the organization "Bimkom ? Planners for Planning Rights."

The poll found that only 38 percent of respondents between the ages of 30 and 49 agree with their younger counterparts, as opposed to 44.5 percent of people aged 50 and older.

The organization is currently in the midst of a campaign seeking recognition for the 34 unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev, which house some 80,000 people. The organization says those villages meet the planning standards of the Interior Ministry. The poll was conducted as part of the campaign in order to assess Jewish public opinion regarding the Bedouin population.

The poll also revealed that 40 percent of respondents think that the state should recognized the unrecognized villages, and allow the Bedouin to develop them. Roughly 56.1 percent of respondents said they believe those villages take up 10 percent of the Negev, when in reality they are situated on only two percent of the southern desert.

The differences in opinion on the Bedouin did not fall on the age divide only, but the gender divide as well. Roughly 20 percent of men believe the Bedouin population constitutes a strategic threat to the State of Israel, while only eight percent of female respondents agreed. Roughly 45 percent of women support recognition of the unrecognized villages, as opposed to 33 percent of men.

Similarly, 20 percent of men believe the State of Israel belongs to the Jewish people only, as opposed to 11 percent of women.
