Should we come to terms with a nuclear Iran?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appearances have attracted most of the attention at the annual debate at the United Nations General Assembly. Ahmadinejad did not offer anything new during his third visit to New York. In all his appearences he reiterated his well-known views: rejecting the legitimacy of Israel's existence, considering Holocaust denial as part of historical research, and insisting on Iran's right to continue its nuclear program.

But this time his statements stirred a great deal more interest than in the past, either because of the respectable forum offered him by Columbia University, or because of the timing. Indeed, in the American public debate there is increasing talk of a preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear installations, and Ahmadinejad tried to rally the liberal antiwar camp. His statements condemning American support for Israel were similar to the claims of the opponents to the Israel lobby in the United States.
The broad resonance of the Iranian president's message at the UN should serve as a powerful reminder that Israel is faced with a dangerous enemy who opposes the existence of a Jewish state in the Middle East, is seeking to acquire nuclear capabilities and is actively helping Hezbollah and Palestinian terrorist organizations. This is a foe who rejects all efforts at compromise between Israel and moderate Palestinians and Arab states, and who tries to tip in his favor the regional balance of power by exploiting the American entanglement in Iraq.

Against Ahmadinejad's statements comes the clear voice of France's new president, Nicolas Sarkozy, whose election is emerging as a significant event in international affairs in general and in Middle East policy in particular. In his first appearance before the UN General Assembly, Sarkozy declared that allowing Iran to attain nuclear weapons would be an "unacceptable risk to stability in the region and the world." U.S. President George W. Bush chose to avoid confronting Ahmadinejad, but criticized the UN's hypocritical attitude toward Israel.

The events at the UN General Assembly justify Sarkozy's recent declaration that the Iranian nuclear plan is the most urgent international problem. The U.S. and France agreed to cooperate in stepping up sanctions against Iran through the Security Council.

But their task is far from easy: Russia is making it difficult, and in Europe there is not much support for limiting economic ties with a petroleum giant. The sense of peril, felt in full force in Jerusalem, Washington and Paris, is not having the same effect in other capitals. Iran's blatant disregard for the Security Council's demands that it cease uranium enrichment is being viewed with indifference in many countries.

At least in public, everyone agrees that it is best to prevent Iran's nuclear program through nonviolent measures such as sanctions. But the growing difficulty in rallying support for sanctions brings us closer to the most difficult decision of all: Should we come to terms with a nuclear Iran led by extremists like Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or try to stop it by force before it acquires the bomb
