Low-cost flights, soon coming to an airport here

The fashion of cheap flights that has pervaded Europe over the past two years has begun to filter into the Israeli market. Flight tickets are still not as cheap as they are in Europe, where one can fly from one country to another for 10 euros, but the skies are slowly opening.

TUI Airline currently operates six weekly flights to three destinations in Germany, and Thomson will begin local operations this November, dispatching six weekly flights to destinations in Britain.

In addition, the French airline Corsair and Belgium's Jetair, both members of the TUI group, have requested permits to fly to Israel and are awaiting the results of Israel's talks with France and Belgium on the number of flights that will be authorized.

It appears that with reservations made far enough in advance, consumers can save hundreds of dollars with discounted airline tickets to Germany or London.

A two-way ticket to Berlin, for example, reserved now for December will cost $220 with TUI, compared with an average of $450 on charter flights and $560 on average for regular flights - a difference of 100 to 150 percent.

Flights to London ordered now for December are also substantially cheaper. Thomson flights go for $279, compared with an average of $587 on charter flights and $590 on average for regular flights, a difference of about 110 percent.

TUI reports that its six weekly flights are departing from Israel at near full capacity, even though the company has not advertised.

The regular-flight airlines have already begun preparing for battle in Israel. The Israeli carriers El Al and Sun Dor have enlisted the services of a public relations company to handle branding, and two weeks ago, at the height of the season, British Airways announced discounts on tourist-class seats on flights to London.
