Mubarak: No normal relations with Israel unless there is peace
By DPA

PARIS - There will be no normalization of relations between Israel and Arab countries without peace in the Middle East, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Monday in Paris.

"I think it will not be possible to normalize relations unless peace is established between Israel and the Arab nations," Mubarak said after talks with outgoing French President Jacques Chirac.

Mubarak was referring to recent statements by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who said he was ready to participate in a summit meeting with moderate Arab nations, such as Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

"Our people will hold us responsible and accountable," Mubarak said. "Our people are not asleep. If the people in the region see that there is a normalization while there are territories still occupied [by Israel], we will have serious problems."

Olmert said Monday night that Israel is ready to meet Saudi Arabia over its 2002 peace initiative, calling on the Saudis to take the lead in fighting extremism in the Arab world.

Mubarak travelled to Paris for a farewell meeting with Chirac, whose term expires on May 17. The Egyptian president said he did not believe there would be any change in France's policy toward the Middle East regardless of who follows Chirac into the Elysee Palace.

According to the daily Metro, Mubarak is to meet with the three front-runners for the presidential election, former interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy, Socialist Segolene Royal and head of the centrist UDF party Francois Bayrou.
