Hamas no-shows at interfaith meeting in West Jerusalem
By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondent

Hamas minister Sheikh Mahmoud Abu Tir did not attend a West Jerusalem meeting of Muslim and Jewish clerics at which, according to organizers, he had planned to announce Hamas' readiness for a truce.

Abu Tir is the Palestinian Authority's minister for Jerusalem affairs.

Organizers from the Israeli side accused the Shin Bet and police of blocking Abu Tir and other Hamas representatives from East Jerusalem from participating in the meeting, which took place at a West Jerusalem hotel.

Right-wing protesters outside the venue called for Abu Tir's arrest and "targeted assassination," but he never showed.

Spokesmen for the Shin Bet and Jerusalem police said they had not contacted Abu Tir, nor had they prevented "him or others from getting there."

The meeting was attended by MK Sheikh Ibrahim Sarsur, chair of the United Arab List and leader of the Southern Islamic Movement; Menachem Froman, the rabbi of the settlement Tekoa; and Yitzhak Frankental, whose son Arik was kidnapped and murdered by Hamas operatives 12 years ago. The trio took advantage of the press presence to call for interfaith reconciliation.
