Cop believed to have worked for suspected crime family
By Jonathan Lis and Roni Singer-Heruti, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

The Justice Ministry's Police Investigations Department is probing an officer who was arrested on suspicion of working for a suspected underworld crime family.

The officer was arrested about two weeks ago on suspicion he providing the Alperon family with information from police databases in exchange for money.

The arrested officer is suspected of pulling information on vehicles parked on Ya'akov Alperon's street and providing the suspected crime kingpin with the names of the vehicles' owners.

The investigation is still underway.

In related news, a small explosion occurred Wednesday in Ramat Gan that police believe to be connected to an underworld dispute, but no one was hurt.

Israel Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said the small explosive device was placed near a car wash by the diamond exchange in Ramat Gan's business district.

"Police are looking into the cause of the explosion. [It] seems to be criminal activity," he said.

Suspected underworld kingpins Nissim and Aryeh Alperon, who were at the car wash at the time of the blast, were questioned by police.

The Alperon family lawyer, Shai Nudel, said neither of the brothers was hurt in the blast.

Police were attempting to determine whether the bomb was planted in order to harm members of the Alperon family or was hidden by the car wash's owners and exploded due to a technical mishap.

The Alperons, suspected to be one of the senior crime families in Israel, has been recently involved in a violent conflict with underworld figure Amir Mulner.

The conflict began some four months ago with a brawl and stabbing incident during a conference of underworld figures at the Daniel Hotel in Herzliya. Mulner was moderately to seriously wounded in the incident.

The Alperon-Mulner struggle then began "heating up" police expected revenge attacks. Two months later, a second fight broke out when suspected Alperon and Mulner henchmen ran into each other at a Tel Aviv restaurant. Despite the threatening use of handguns, there were no casualties in that incident.

Police believe the Wednesday blast was the latest in the Alperon-Mulner conflict
