PA police foil suicide attack on Gaza-Israel border crossing
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, and Agencies

Palestinian police officers on Wednesday foiled an attempt by militants to drive a bomb-laden vehicle into the Karni crossing, the main cargo passage between Israel and Gaza.

Palestinian security officials said that three Palestinian security officers and two civilians were wounded in exchanges of fire at Karni as militants tried to ram at least one explosives-laden car into the crossing.

"The car did not explode and it is under our control," a Palestinian security officer said.

The militants reportedly belonged to the Popular Resistance Committee, which was behind the 2003 attack on a U.S. convoy in Gaza, in which three Americans were killed.

The two militants were arrested and security officials were dismantling a large amount of explosives found in the car, the officials said.

Workers at Karni, the main cargo crossing point between Israel and Gaza, had been evacuated and the area closed after gunshots were heard in the area.

An IDF spokeswoman said the military had received a preliminary report of gunfire in the area and had closed the crossing.

Palestinian officials at Karni said Israel shut down operations there after shots were fired on the Palestinian side.

The Israeli border authority said it shut the crossing on order of Israeli defense officials.

Karni has been shut down for much of the past four months due to repeated warnings of planned attacks by Palestinian terrorist organizations.

Human rights groups charge that the closure caused losses of more than $24 million to the Palestinian economy and sparked fears of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
