By Amos Harel and Arnon Regular

Six Israel Defense Forces soldiers and four Palestinians were wounded yesterday in the village of Tsurif, southwest of Bethlehem, in an incident that began with a traffic accident and turned into a riot.

One soldier sustained light to moderate injuries and the rest were lightly wounded. One of the Palestinians was badly hurt.

The incident began when an army jeep overturned during a routine patrol of the village, injuring the four Nahal Brigade soldiers inside. They called for a rescue team, but in the meantime were surrounded by dozens of residents who pelted them with stones and cinder blocks. The soldiers responded with rubber bullets and tear gas.

Cinder blocks were also thrown at the rescue forces that arrived on the scene, lightly wounding two officers.

They fired live rounds in the direction of one youth who had thrown a cinder block, hitting him in the lower part of his body. Palestinian sources said he was taken to a hospital in Hebron, which reported he was suffering from head injuries and was in serious condition
