Palestinian officials approved a new Cabinet on Wednesday that is expected to put strong allies of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in charge of key portfolios, Palestinian officials said.

The makeup of the government was agreed to on Wednesday at a meeting of Abbas' Fatah movement.

"I will present my Cabinet to the legislative council for approval on
Tuesday," Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia said - referring to the Palestinia legislature - after the meeting.

According to initial reports two of the major cabinet changes were the appointment of General Nasser Yusuf as minister of internal security, who will consequently be in charge of most of the security forces.

A second key appointment Nasser al-Qidwa, former PLO envoy to the United Nations and Yasser Arafat's nephew, who is slated to be named foreign minister.

The Current foreign minister, Nabil Shaath, would be the new planning minister and deputy prime minister, official Palestinian sources said.

In recent weeks there have been reports of strong disagreement between Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Qureia over the composition of the new government, and the appointments to central cabinet positions.

It still remains unclear if key figures in the PA, such as Mohammed Dahlan, will be given any cabinet portfolios.

The feud among the leaders of the Palestinian Authority led to one of the deepest crisis within the ruling party Fatah and its conclusive defeat to the radical Islamic movement Hamas at the local authority elections in the Gaza Strip last month.

Also Wednesday, new U.S. security coordinator for the Middle East, Army Lt. Gen. William E. Ward, met with Abbas in Ramallah. He did not comment after the meeting.
