Snow falls in Jerusalem; storms shut Golan schools

Snow storms were raging Tuesday morning on the northern Golan Heights, causing the closing of schools at Kibbutz Merom Golan and shutting down kindergartens. Snow and sleet also fell for a short time in Jerusalem, covering trees but not accumulating on the ground.

A number of roads on the Golan Heights were closed to due snow and ice and Israel Defense Forces vehicles were plowing roads.

Heavy snow also fell on Mount Hermon and by Tuesday morning some 1.7 meters of snow had accumulated by the ski basin's upper chairlift. The site was closed to to visitors due to the inclement weather.

Snow was also falling on the Galilee mountains and the road between Misgav Am and Manara was closed to traffic. The school at Kibbutz Dafna was also closed due to the wintery weather.

Rain was predicted Tuesday from northern Israel to the central Negev Desert region and will be periodically accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. Temperatures will be low and snow is expected to fall on central and northern mountain peaks higher than 700 meters in elevation.

The rains are expected to ease off toward Tuesday afternoon.

The cold spell is to continue into Wednesday and will be accompanied by localized rain showers. Thursday will also be cold and partly cloudy.

Friday will be partly cloudy and very cold. Rain is expected to fall across the country and snow will likely fall on northern peaks.

The water level in Lake Kinneret rose six centimeters in the past day. Since the beginning of the December rains, the Kinneret has risen 62 centimeters and is just 1.4 meters below the upper red line.
