Activists protest house demolitions in Arab village
By Jackie Khouri, Haaretz Correspondent

Some 150 Taayush activists, both Jewish and Arab, from the Wadi Ara region protested near the village of Arara on Saturday against the planned demolition of homes in the unrecognized village of Dar Al-Hanun and the closing of the road leading up to the village.

Taayush is an Israeli Jewish-Arab coexistance organization, acting to end the Israeli regime in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and to achieve full civil equality for all Israeli citizens.

The protesters stood at the Arara junction and held signs calling on the government to recognize the village, which was established in 1925, but still has no electricity, and has hardly any infrastructure. Police officers were present at the protest, but no irregular incidents occurred.

In May 2001, Taayush activists paved a 150-meter long asphalt road and set up a playground in the village, in which some 100 people reside. Recently, a demolition order has been issued for the road. Taayush activists and residents of the village announced that they would fight against the planned demolition by all means possible.

"Whoever saw the children's joy after the new road and playground were constructed, will not let anything end that happiness," Taayush activists said.

Mustafa Abu Halal, a resident of the village and a leading activist campaigning for its recognition, said Saturday that residents of Dar Al-Hanun have been campaigning unsuccessfully for recognition since 1986.

"Why is the state conspiring against our small village? All we are asking for is that our presence on our land be recognized."
