OneVoice activists encourage Palestinians to `get out and vote'
By Daphna Berman

Hundreds of OneVoice Palestine volunteers, together with New York Jewish businessman Daniel Lubetsky, canvassed towns and refugee camps across the West Bank this week as part of a nonpartisan campaign meant to encourage high voter turnout ahead of Sunday's Palestinian Authority elections.

Organizers hope the campaign, which kicked off two weeks ago with a parade from the Muqata to the Ramallah city center, will drum up support for democracy and reform in the PA.

"We encourage people to raise their voice and be part of the decision-making process in a nontraditional way," said Nisreen Shahin, the executive director of OneVoice Palestine. "People are upset about the situation, but they need to know that they can change it. It's not enough to think or speak - people need to act and vote."

Earlier this week, OneVoice launched an 80-second public service announcement that aired on Palestinian television. Featuring chief Palestinian Islamic Justice Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi and actor Richard Gere, who introduced himself as "speaking for the entire world," the announcement encouraged viewers, in Arabic, to "get out and vote."

Activists are planning large-scale events in Jericho and Gaza tomorrow and will be returning to Ramallah for day-long festivities on election day.

The OneVoice peace initiative, which has enjoyed the attention and support of other Hollywood stars, such as Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman and Jason Alexander, was founded by Lubetsky in 2002 in an effort to amplify the voices of moderate Israeli and Palestinian laypeople
