Defense official: Cease support of radical right-wing colleges
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has received a recommendation from a senior ministry official to cease the sponsorship of two pre-military colleges, due to radical right-wing political messages delivered to their students.

Mofaz is expected to issue a decision in the matter soon, Channel Two reported Thursday.

There are 23 pre-military colleges in Israel. The defense and education ministries endorse and financially support the institutions, half of which are religious.

The Defense Ministry's support is necessary in order for the colleges to secure year-long deferments of their students' military draft. The ministry's approval of the colleges also allows the Israel Defense Forces to be actively involved in the colleges' study programs.

A senior official at the Defense Ministry was appalled by scenes he encountered in visits to two colleges, the Ateret Cohanim yeshiva in the Muslim quarter in East Jerusalem and the pre-military college in the Ma'aleh Efraim settlement in the Jordan Valley.

The official received the impression that instructors and rabbis in the colleges do not promote democratic values among students due to an underlying radical right-wing agenda in their curriculum.

Moreover, in many of the courses students are actively encouraged to refuse army orders in case of settlement evacuation. The ministry official recommends that the ministry's support be removed from both institutions - a disciplinary action that would lead to their immediate shut-down.

Mofaz is expected to convene all the principals of pre-military colleges and will discuss, among other issues, the issue of refusal.

Two months ago the majority of college principals, religious and non-religious alike, signed an open letter condemning the calls to refuse orders. This move came as several other heads of pre-military colleges made statements interpreted as calls to refuse evacuation orders.
