New Zealand increases aid to Palestinian homeless
By The Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand on Wednesday slammed Israel's recent destruction of Palestinian homes in the occupied territories and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a UN organization helping the Palestinian refugees.

Associate Foreign Affairs Minister Marian Hobbs said the 800,000 New Zealand dollars (US$502,000) donation was a response to the growing pressures on the U.N.'s Relief and Works Agency, which is delivering humanitarian aid to 4.1 million Palestinians living amid the deteriorating political situation in the West Bank and Gaza.

"We have been shocked and appalled by the recent displacement of thousands of civilian refugees following the destruction of their homes in the past few months," she said.

New Zealand also contributes NZ$300,000 (US$188,000) annually to UNRWA.
