Doctors blast plans to close psychiatric hospitals
By Ran Reznick

The Health Ministry's plans for the public psychiatric system which include closing two state-run psychiatric hospitals will be a "fatal blow to patients and their families," senior members of Israel Psychiatric Association said yesterday.

The organization called a press conference yesterday along with heads of groups representing mentally-ill patients and their families to protest the plan currently being drawn up by the Health Ministry.

The Israel Psychiatric Association said that the plan, part of an overall efficiency drive in the state's health system, was "a disaster waiting to happen."

Dr. Shmuel Kron, director of the Shalvata Mental Health Center in Hod Hasharon, said the plan seems to take the view that the hospitals are "storage rooms for nihilist patients.

The Health Ministry said in response that no final decisions have been made yet.
