Three U.S. Patriot batteries deployed in center and north
By Ha'aretz Correspondent

The American soldiers currently stationed in Israel have deployed three Patriot missile batteries in the center and north of the country as part of the joint U.S.-Israeli exercise in preparation for the anticipated war in Iraq.

The Patriots have been deployed in Jaffa, Kfar Yona and Haifa.

In the first stage, only the technical and logistical equipment was set up. This is to be followed by the deployment of the actual missiles.

The three American batteries come on top of the two Patriot batteries and the Arrow batteries already deployed by the Israel Defense Forces.

The current drill is examining scenarios different from those of the 1991 Gulf War: The Patriots are designed to defend Israel against attacks from the air and not against long-range missiles. The exercise, dubbed "Jennifer Cobra," is expected to last several weeks.

The Patriot batteries in Haifa and the central area will remain there until the end of the week and will then be taken to the Negev, where a Patriot missile will be fired "live" in the next stage of the joint exercise.

An American anti-missile radar vessel is also participating in the exercise, which also aims to improve cooperation between the two armies in the event of missiles being fired at Israel or an attempt to penetrate Israeli airspace.

The American forces are due to remain in Israel until the war against Iraq is over. If and when hostilities break out, they will again deploy their equipment in strategic locations in Israel. Another two Patriot batteries are due to arrive in the country from Germany and will remain here for two years
