Police follow trail of bounced checks
By Roni Singer

The Tel Aviv police have been investigating yet another alleged bank scam for the past three months - one that reportedly involves Likud activist Shlomi Oz.

Police are investigating suspicions that Roni Sasson, who in the past has served jail time for drug offenses and illegal possession of weapons, stole NIS 4.5 million from Bank Leumi two years ago by depositing checks drawn on an account at United Mizrahi Bank.

Since United Mizrahi was on strike at the time, Leumi was unable to determine whether there was money in the account to cover the checks. By the time it discovered that there was not, Sasson had allegedly already transferred the money to the accounts of Oz and two well-known loan sharks - Benny Ravizadeh and Meir Hasson, who are also suspected of involvement in the embezzlement scam that caused the collapse of Trade Bank earlier this year.

Oz's name has also come up recently in connection with another alleged scandal - the awarding of a lucrative security contract by the Airports Authority to a firm that failed to meet the minimum tender requirements.

A police spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that a probe is underway, but the police have not yet summoned any of the people allegedly involved for questioning. In addition to investigating whether Sasson engaged in deliberate fraud, police are also checking whether a Bank Leumi employee helped to clear the checks.

Sasson's attorney, Zion Amir, said in response that Leumi filed suit against Sasson a year ago because of the bounced checks, but the two have since agreed on a timetable for repaying the debt
