Jewish sports club attacked in Toulouse, southern France

TOULOUSE - Arsonists threw petrol bombs into a Jewish sports club in southern France early on Saturday, damaging furniture and sports equipment in the latest in a series of attacks on Jewish targets around the country.

Police said the door to the Maccabi club was forced open and petrol-filled bottles thrown inside, causing a fire which was rapidly brought under control by firemen. No one was injured.

The incident comes one day after an unexploded home-made bomb was found in a Jewish cemetery in eastern France that had already been a target of arsonists earlier in the week.

In southern France, three men admitted throwing petrol bombs and setting ablaze a building containing a synagogue in the city of Montpellier earlier this week.

And in Paris, police have questioned five suspects accused of throwing petrol bombs at a synagogue on Wednesday.

The spate of attacks, which some Jewish leaders link directly with Israel's military response to an 18-month long Palestinian uprising, has prompted Prime Minister Lionel Jospin to order police guards on Jewish sites.

On Saturday, thousands of people marched in the streets of Paris, Marseille and other French cities in support of the Palestinians. On Sunday, Jewish organizations are due to march in Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, Lyon, Strasbourg and Toulouse in support of Israel and in protest at the anti-Jewish attacks
