Since when can we justify nations morally; nationalism in itself holds the roots of racism. Simply when a group of people choose to secede and create their sovereign nation-state, they do so as they have discursively defined themselves as a "nation" based on a shared religion, language, ethnicity, race, heritage, etc. All these socially defined institutions are not moral justifications to create a nation.
Israel is no exception, as it was formed on an ehtnocentric pillar, justifying the need for a nation-state for the Jewish people. The fact that zionism remains the "core" of current Israeli politics, racism cannot be eliminated. When the Jews and the Palestinians are no longer viewed as 2 nations, perhaps co-existence can start to exist, and racism could cease to exist.
Racism is "institutional" while prejudice is "personal" which means that eliminating racism starts on the bigger scene. Perhaps the need to eliminate racism needs to be begin in the forefront. |
