At one time racism referred to a kind of bigotry that was rooted in an obsession with ones supposed race or ethnicity, in particular, the white supremacy that was developed by the British and other northern Europeans. Now racism has become a secular euphemism for any kind of evil one wants to make taboo. That there is an ethnic dimension to this conflict is obvious, and a lot of Israelis and Jews have lots of ignorant ideas and an unsophisticated way of dealing with race that comes across as racism. But Levy here is a left wing example of this. He is using the word as a club so broadly and clumsily that there is no precision in his analysis, and thus no analysis at all, just a lot of name calling and hysteria. He`s the opposite side of the racist coin: someone whose liberal obsession with race makes him want to attack any manifestation of difference, cultural, political, ethnic or other, which gets in the way of a liberal fantasy of blissful coexistence. |
