Mr. Benn, You paint an unfair - to Israel - picture. Your "summation" at the end of this piece contradicts what you said earlier in it. You say "Neither side is prepared to give up its national symbols... "united Jerusalem in Israel`s hands forever"." BUT previously, you stated Olmert WAS willing to compromise on Jerusalem - dividing sovereignty and "sharing" the holy basin! The Palestinians are the ones totally unwilling to compromise! The insistence on "Right of Return" in a more than symbolic way, as Olmert offered (and their refusal to say Israel is a Jewish state - which contradicts the 2 states for 2 peoples idea!) just goes to show that they want their cake (Palestinian State) and to eat it too (i.e. to eat up Israel demographically and eventually to turn it into a second Palestine state!) So don`t say both are unwilling to give up "national symbols" & "pledges" - Israel has been VERY willing while the Palestinians are NOT at all! (NB & these are the Palestinian "moderates"!) |
