The problem with the separation barrier is not that it exists, but where it is built. If we want a separation barrier, it has to be built west of the Green Line and not on Palestinian land. The creation of the seamline zone - the section of land east of the Green line and west of the fence, is usurping Palestinian land and separating people from their fields. Ironically, they need a permit to enter these areas, even if they are not part of Israel proper. The fract that the fence does not run along the border, the fact that it is not finished, the fact that there are places where people can cross unhindered into Israel anyway, make me wonder just how much of a "security precaution" the fence is and how much of it is designed to make statements regrading whose land is whose. If the fence were on Israeli turf, the world would have a lot less to say about it.There are hundreds of fences all over the globe for much less dire purposes than keeping out suicide bombers. |
