aliyah is used to divert attention from deeper israeli "needs" such as stopping the brain drain, or bring back the hundreds of thousands of Israelis who live around the world. Aliyah, and the selling of aliyah to the israeli public, is used by the "powers that be" as a psychological "fix" for israeli society; to reinforce the VALIDITY of an Israel/ living in ISrael.
All societies need shared stories, raison detres for being. [THese are known as national myths.] Stories that give meaning and shape the national conciousness.
I remember when the term "yeridah" was used derisively, but so many people have left that "yeridah" is not used any more.
There is a need for a new national belief/ story / myth to continue building our society around. |
