Heather, a number of Western powers, including the US, knew what was going on the the Third Reich; but democracies are like ocean tankers - it takes what seems like an eternity for them to change course, even when individuals like you and I can clearly see the icebergs coming. I saw the Jewish refugees trickling in from Hitler`s Germany, and it was a nightmarish sight. We then knew what kind of foe we would face, and knew we would face him soon.
Hugh, as a Briton who survived the Blitz in London to see the Canadians coming to our defence, all I can say is: God bless the memory of your father and of his comrades-in-arms, and THANK YOU.
