If Israel were itching for a war, it would have attacked Iran a long time ago. Israel has a democratically elected government with a conscript army. No parent is going to vote for a government that will send their sons and daughters to die (or husband, wife, brother, etc.) unless they are convinced that there is no other option. On top of that, no citizen is going to vote for a government that will start a war and bring missiles on the Israeli home front.
Historically, the Israeli population has always been willing to give peace a chance, for precisely these reasons. Governments that did not respect these wishes never lasted long. More right-wing governments have usually only come to power when Israelis feel that the other side does not really want peace, but wants to use peace negotiations to weaken Israel and continue the conflict. |
