| Yes, he was an American soldier and yes he was a Jewish soldier; just as his local community in Washington will honor his memory, his larger community of co-religionists is entitled to the same memory. American Jews are an integral part of America - for better and for worse. God knows, we, as a community, will certainly be held responsible for the likes of Madoff. Additionally, more than once American citizens like Leon Klinghoffer have been singled out for their religion and made to suffer for it at the hands of our enemies. Likewise, I would expect that the Catholic American or Moslem American communities can honor the memory of their faith without questioning their patriotism. |
